Using a desktop scanner

How to use a desktop scanner in the computer labs for scannng images, documents and text including Optical Character Recognition (OCR).

The scanner you'll be using in our computer labs is a Cannon Lide 110 and looks like this:

There are two software packages you can use with this scanner:

  • FS Image Viewier is used to scan images and photographs.
  • OmniPage is used to scan text for Optical Character Recognition.

Show instructions for:

 
  1. Click Start All ProgramsScanner FS Image Viewer.
  2. Click the Acquire Image icon.
  3. Place your document face-down in the scanner.
  4. Click Scan.
  5. Choose your scan options, and then click Scan.
  6. The scanner will now scan your document.
  7. When the scan has finished, you can then choose to either Save, Print or Email the scan. For this guide we're going to click Save.
  8. Give your scan a file name and chose where you want to save it. Click OK.
  9. A pop-up window will appear informing you you're scan has been saved successfully.
  10. Repeat this process if you have more documents to scan.
 
  1. Click Start → All Programs → Scanner → OmniPage SE 4.0.
  2. Place your document face-down in the scanner.
  3. Click Scan (1).
  4. Your document will now be scanned. Once finished, you will be asked if you want to scan more pages. If you do, click Add More Pages, otherwise click Stop Loading Pages.
  5. Once you've finished scanning, click OCR proofreading (2).
  6. Once completed, click Export Results (3).
  7. Choose a file type and name, and then click OK.
