Install NVivo

This article will show you how to install NVivo

NVivo is software that supports qualitative and mixed methods research. It lets you collect, organize and analyze content from interviews, focus groups, discussions, surveys, audion and social media data.

The University of Essex holds a site licence for NVivo and it can be installed on any PC - either those connected to the campus network or those used at home by University staff and students. However, it must be removed from the computer if the owner leaves the University and takes the PC with them.

Instructions for:

 
  1. Visit the IT Services Licensed Software page and from the Software column, click on the item you wish to install.
    Note: to find out if you are running 64 bit or 32 bit, follow these steps: 
    • Windows 10: Right click on the Start button and select System.
  2. Tick to agree to the terms of the License Agreement then click Accept.
  3. In the next window click on the Download button. An .iso file will be generated and you will also receive an email containing the licence code information and the Terms and Conditions.
    Note: Mac users - the download link will be emailed to you, click the link and follow the install wizard.
  4. Navigate to the downloaded .iso file and double click to launch.
  5. This will produce an .exe file - double click the .exe file to op​en it.
  6. Click Yes to allow this app to make changes to your device then click Install.
  7. Follow the NVivo Installer Wizard to complete the Install.
  8. Your computer will restart automatically. If you have applications open, it will prompt you to close them before continuing.
  9. After installing NVivo, when you start the software for the first time you will be prompted to enter and activate your licence key.
 
  1. For Windows 7 - Visit the IT Services Licensed Software page and from the Software column, click on the item you wish to install.
    Note: to find out if you are running 64 bit or 32 bit, follow these steps: 
    1. Windows 7 or Vista: Click on Start button then right-click Computer > Properties > System.
  2. Tick to agree to the terms of the License Agreement then click Accept.
  3. Copy the Licence Key code found half-way down the page and then click Download. You will also receive an email with the Licence code information and the terms and conditions.
  4. Double click on the file in the bottom left corner of your screen.
  5. Then double click the .exe file to execute.
  6. Click Yes to allow this app to make changes to your device then click Install.
  7. Follow the NVivo Installer Wizard to complete the Install.
  8. Your computer will restart automatically. If you have applications open, it will prompt you to close them before continuing.
  9. After installing NVivo, when you start the software for the first time you will be prompted to enter and activate your licence key.
 Where's my license key?
Your new license key should have been emailed to you, but if it hasn't then go to www.essex.ac.uk/it/isn/software and sign in. Click the appropriate NVivo product and Accept the license agreement. The license key will be shown on the next page and you'll also receive an email.
